plan to do something of a terrorist style on 9/11, nothing to do with the video that was made in los angeles which ridiculed the prophet. was the motivation a planned 9/11 marking by a terrorist group or was it an opportunistic move which jumped on this video and used that as a cause to attack? which one? >> well, chris, based on the reporting we've had out of cairo from my great colleague david kirkpatrick it seems to line up very well with what we're hearing from u.s. intelligence forces, is that this was motivated some by the video but that the group that did it were militants and looking for an excuse. you can ask the question, would they have done something on september 11th even absent the video in i don't think i've got, at least, right now sufficient clarity on that question. what we do know is there was no demonstration that turned into a bigger militant attack. in fact, it began as a militant attack. it may have been motivated in part by word of the video which, of course, was spreading from egypt and other places. the protests in egypt had been just a few hours before. >>

oversight committee will hold a hearing on that sensitive topic, too. kristin welker joins us live from los angeles. what more can you tell bus abou mr. brennan and his anticipated meeting? >> reporter: they're not sharing a lot of information about this meeting in part for security reasons. the fbi tried to get into benghazi right after that attack. it took them quite some time to do that, so they are being incredibly tight-lipped about the meetings that john brennan will have tomorrow, but again he will be meeting with top officials in benghazi. specifically we are told to talk about some of these issues, including security concerns that existed at the consulate. those are some of the questions that are going to come up on wednesday during those hearings that will be held on the hill. so there are a lot of questions that the white house has been fielding for a number of days now. certainly counterterrorism adviser john brennan will be meeting about those. as you know, the white house has been to some extent on the defense when it comes to this issue. mitt romney today going after presiden

operation going there. people protesting the whole issue of that video coming out of los angeles. that was true, too. the two things were going at the same time. that's the current reporting of the times. that's the confirmation on the earlier reporting. so the president wasn't quite up to date on that which surprised me. but boy did candy crowley deserve credit. noel acts of terrorism will ever shake the result. very first lines of the president of the rose garden. so even though she caught him, tagged him, made the out at third base, i have to say that the president could have used more information. he has a very good case. it's still a combination of terrorism organized by al qaeda north africa, but it's locally based operating perhaps on the basis of that video as well as the anniversary of 9/11. we have yet to get to the bottom of this and the president is being honest and fair about that. >> i think the president had a stellar performance tonight because he strengthened his position with women and also on immigration. he had far more facts than mitt romney could ever put out on immig

bradley effect and the bradley effect for those that don't know, the los angeles mayor ran statewide, always underperformed. if there is a bradley effect -- and i'm skeptical that there is -- but if there is, it's something we need to talk about, i think it would happen in western pennsylvania, eastern ohio where there are so many white working-class voters. have you guys picked up any sort of -- any talk of that at all in the romney campaign or in the obama campaign that this could be a reality in ohio? >> well, i would just say starting with the romney campaign, less about that, especially with an incumbent president. but going back months, the romney campaign talked about something we also haven't talked about, which is the effect of romney being a morman. and does that have an effect on the vote? they had concerns back then about whether it would impede how well they do in the southern part of ohio turning out conservatives. i think that concern may have abated some, but it's still one of those unknowns. i pick up less with regard to the bradley effect on president obama, joe. >>
